Exodus 20:16 - You must not lie. (TLB) Do not accuse
anyone falsely. (GNT) No lies about your neighbor. (MSG) You shall not witness falsely against your
neighbor. (AMP) You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. (NIV)
I like the context that is given as we read more than
one version of this scripture. This scripture is not just a “don’t do it!”
scripture. As with the previous four commandments, this scripture reveals part
of the way in which the Father desires for us to operate in relationship with one
another. We are not to speak falsely about our neighbor. We are to honor and
love our neighbors (Mark 12:31) as well as our enemies (Luke 6:35). This scripture
helps to reveal the heart of our Father – His love for us and His desire for us
to love one another.
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he who
breathes out lies shall not escape.
(Proverbs 19:5 AMP)
